The 2008 World Machine-Tool Survey at a Glance

Total world output increases.  The $71-billion in 2007 machine-tool shipments by the 29 countries in this survey represents an 18% gain over their 2006 output.

Most producers make gains. Only five of the surveyed countries dipped in output. Top producer Japan has a solid increase, while demand in Germany fosters a boom in production there. Builders in China surge an astounding 43% in shipments.

China continues is voracious consumption. The world’s biggest market for machine tools—by far—grows 17%. Japan remains a strong number-two, and demand in Germany grows by nearly 30%, moving that country ahead of the U.S. as the number-three consumer.

Germany leads in exports over Japan. Italian builders also make a strong showing. Despite a weakening dollar, American exports decline 8%.
